It's surprising how many people have very incorrect ideas about the Mormon religion, or don't realize the things they really believe. It's true that there have been so-called "splinter groups" that have broken away from the main church and have made news with certain issues and practices, but of course what a splinter group does shouldn't always reflect on a particular church overall. The Mormon religion is no different.
The fundamental beliefs of the Mormon religion are based on the Book of Mormon, which they believe to be an additional gospel revealed to their leader, Joseph Smith, from Jesus Christ. These beliefs include the thought that those living in early America were to be considered Jesus' "other sheep," who were called to give a witness about him. Part of Joseph Smith's testimony is that Jesus himself visited those persons in early America himself to preach, heal the sick, pray, and perform miracles.
Many beliefs of the Mormon religion center on the family. They feel that it is part of God's will that persons marry and raise families and teach their children the Mormon religion as well. The family structure is very archaic, with the husband and father having absolute authority over his wife and children, who are all submissive to him. They also believe in preaching; some young male adherents to the Mormon religion go on preaching campaigns for two years when they reach a certain age.
The Mormon religion also teaches that there has always been a gospel about Jesus Christ from the time of Adam and Eve, and that this gospel has been apostatized many times throughout history, with a restoration that always followed. Adherents to the Mormon religion believe that Joseph Smith's vision was part of the restoration to correct the most recent apostasy in the Christian faith.
